There are countless books that dive deep into the theory of Enochian magick, yet very few offer clear, practical guidance — most hide the actual practice behind walls of dense text. Here I want to do the exact opposite.
When I first became interested in Enochian magick, I naturally started buying every book I could find. To this day I still haven’t read every single one I own, because over time I realised something crucial: practice is what truly matters.
A lot of professionals, theorists and curious outsiders debate the history of Enochian, its subtle nuances, which tables or tablets you should use, and what Enochian angels are or aren’t. Those discussions have their place, but nothing replaces actual practice. Magick exists to be practised, not endlessly debated.
The equipment checklist
Here is the physical setup at a glance, followed by a closer look at each item.
The working setup
- The Holy Table — I use a solid wooden table I found for a reasonable price
- Four small Sigilla Dei Aemeth — traditionally beeswax
- One large Sigillum Dei Aemeth — traditionally beeswax
- The Enochian ring — a paper version works completely fine
- The lamen — worn around the neck so it rests over the heart; mine is paper on a yellow ribbon
- A black mirror or scrying crystal — optional if you don’t intend to scry
- A red or green table cloth — it must not touch the ground; I use linen
- A red or green carpet — large enough for the table and your chair, so your feet rest on it
- A wand — optional; I use a dagger from my earlier practice
- A reference book — I currently work from Enochian Vision Magick
- A ritual robe — ideally white; mine is a simple white linen dress
- Candles — optional; I hand-pour beeswax candles because I love the craft and the scent
Do you really need all of this?
Not necessarily. Having the full traditional setup is ideal, but if your resources are limited you can always improvise.
01 The Holy Table
If you can’t construct or buy a full Holy Table right away, at least draw or craft the tabletop design on a board. You can lay that board on an ordinary table during your rituals. The energy flows through the table design, into the sigils, and through you.
02 The Sigilla Dei Aemeth
At minimum, make paper versions of the four small sigils and the central Sigillum. They serve as the primary energetic anchors for the angels — everything else in the room arranges itself around them.
03 The ring and the lamen
You definitely need these — but paper versions work wonders. I still use paper ones myself, because I have never felt the need to replace them: they are comfortable and convenient. If you can’t adapt or work with improvised materials when you are starting out, you are missing the adaptable essence of real magick.
04 A scrying tool — black mirror or crystal
If you plan to scry, you need a suitable surface. A black scrying mirror (I bought mine cheaply second-hand) or a crystal of your choice both work well. Choose something that catches your focus and lets you gaze into its depth.
05 Table cloth and carpet
Optional at the start, but ritual cloths noticeably improve results. They ground the space and direct energy through the table and the sigils. The traditional texts call for silk, which can be expensive and hard to find — linen or cotton are fantastic alternatives. Avoid synthetic materials; they tend to act as energetic insulators rather than conductors.
06 Ritual clothing
Ideally, wear a white robe made of natural fibres. You don’t need expensive ceremonial garments — I bought a second-hand white linen dress specifically for my Enochian work. If you have no dedicated ritual clothes, wear whatever natural-fibre clothing you own, preferably white, though colour isn’t a total dealbreaker.
07 Wand or dagger
A wand is helpful, but you can trace sigils and lines with your fingers, much as you would in the LBRP. Personally, I love knives, so I use my ritual dagger in place of a wand. Improvise with whatever resonates with you.
08 A reference book
Keep your reference text open on the table while you work. You will read your opening prayers, the Enochian Calls and the letters directly from it — you are not expected to memorise everything. Even the original angelic communications noted that the instructions should be kept open in front of the practitioner.

09 Candles
Purely optional, but they add a great deal of atmosphere. I prefer natural beeswax candles — I pour them myself — though standard paraffin candles work perfectly well if that is what you have.
The most important element: you
At the end of the day, the single most essential piece of equipment is you.
You cannot scry or perform a ritual without being fully present. Find a quiet time when you will not be interrupted and the space is peaceful. I personally avoid scrying when others are home, even though I have my own private room.
Before you begin:
- Take time to ground and relax.
- Do a short breathing or meditation exercise to quiet the mind.
- Cleanse the space — the LBRP does this well — before invoking the angels.
- Open your perception to receive angelic messages. Without receptivity, nothing can take place.
The single most essential piece of equipment is you.
Why equipment matters: the power of grounding
Why do I recommend building up your physical equipment over time, even if you start small?
You may have heard wild stories about people “going crazy” from Enochian magick. I haven’t experienced extreme side effects myself, but I understand where those warnings come from.
Enochian energy is immensely powerful. If you attempt heavy work without physical tools, ritual anchors or proper grounding, your energetic system can easily become overwhelmed. Your body isn’t used to direct contact with intelligences of this magnitude, and that sudden shock can manifest in jarring ways.
From my own practice
Before I began active practice, I listened to recordings of the Enochian Calls on YouTube while lying in bed. Just listening made me dizzy and lightheaded, because I wasn’t grounded, prepared, or using any protective equipment.
When I later performed my first formal ritual with nearly the full setup, I handled the energy smoothly. The physical equipment provided a necessary grounding framework. Over time, as I began scrying daily, my body adapted to the frequency — now I can read the Calls in bed with only a subtle sense of their power.
So yes — at least craft that paper ring. As Archangel Michael reminded Edward Kelley, protection and procedure matter.
