Many people — especially on YouTube and Reddit — discuss the dangers of Enochian magick at length. But why does the system have this reputation, and why do experiences vary so dramatically from one practitioner to another?
Because every magician is unique, spiritual results naturally differ. What follows is a breakdown of why Enochian magick can feel dangerous — and how to practise it safely and effectively.
Before going any further, there is one point worth holding on to: fearmongering. Quite often, people share exaggerated warnings or invented horror stories for a single reason — to discourage you from practising, and from taking control of your own path.
Five pitfalls, five safeguards

Five reasons the practice feels dangerous
01 It might not be for everyone
John Dee and Edward Kelley were often deeply anxious during their work, spending hours belittling themselves in prayer before invoking the angels. Their sixteenth-century minds struggled to comprehend the entities they were contacting, missing concepts that modern practitioners grasp far more easily. Because they were pioneers extracting an entirely new system, the worldview of their era limited how effectively they could apply it.
What does that mean for you?
- Openness is mandatory — if your mind is closed, or if you are not ready to confront harsh truths and make real changes to how you live, Enochian magick will simply drain your energy.
- Not every system fits every practitioner — if you are not ready for this intensity, consider other paths first: traditional archangelic work, folk magick, or demonolatry.
- Respect your personal path — practical real-world action is just as vital as spiritual practice, and every journey unfolds at its own pace.
02 Fear controls the experience
Fear is a powerful force, and it can derail a practice completely. When people plant seeds of fear — claiming these entities will harm you or drive you insane — those thoughts take root.
When I first started scrying, I was terrified, because I did not know what to expect. After my first few sessions, that fear vanished. Caution is necessary; active fear gives away your authority. Remember that you are the one summoning these entities into your space. They cannot harm you unless you allow or invite them to. Maintain authority, demand respect, and always verify what they tell you.

03 Misinformation and deception
Angelic entities have their own minds, perspectives and agendas, which means that not everything they communicate is automatically accurate or beneficial to you.
If you have developed your intuition and built a baseline magickal practice before you begin to scry, you will gradually learn to tell genuine guidance from deception.
- Fact-check insights — cross-examine what you receive using divination, archangelic work, or other spirit allies you consult regularly.
- Verify before acting — never base a major real-world decision, or a complex magical operation, on an unverified scrying session.
04 Lack of proper ritual equipment
Acquiring at least the core tools described in Dee and Kelley’s diaries — the Sigillum Dei Aemeth, the lamen, a consecrated scrying medium — is strongly recommended. I have written about the working equipment list in detail elsewhere, including what can be made from paper and what can wait.
Ritual equipment acts as an energetic conduit and filter, directing energy safely to and from your space. Just as importantly, these physical objects provide psychological and energetic grounding — they keep you anchored, so that you do not drift aimlessly in the astral.
05 Unintended consequences and unexpected delivery
Enochian angels operate from non-human realms with vastly different perspectives. Their methods can be intense, sudden and disruptive.
Sometimes a request goes unanswered; at other times the result arrives in an unexpected form, or brings something you did not ask for.
From my own practice
I once asked for help leaving my job in order to move to another income stream. The angels began making my daily experience at work so uncomfortable that I would quit out of sheer frustration. Once I held a follow-up session and clarified that this was not what I had wanted, they stopped immediately.
How to handle unexpected outcomes:
- Set boundary clauses, not micro-instructions — you cannot dictate how they carry out the work; they operate on their own higher intelligence and will choose their own route. Simple safeguard conditions, however, such as “with harm to none” or “without unnecessary destruction”, make a considerable difference in practice.
- Course-correct quickly — if a situation turns chaotic, hold a follow-up session to reset your intentions and adjust your parameters.
- Understand their intent — Enochian entities rarely place you in genuine physical danger, but they will readily push you into uncomfortable situations to force rapid growth.
So — is it dangerous?
Not in the way the stories suggest. What makes the system feel dangerous is almost always one of the five above: the wrong moment in your development, borrowed fear, unverified information, an ungrounded space, or a request phrased without boundaries. Each of them has a remedy, and none of them requires you to abandon the work.
